About an hour

The homeless and those that are struggling have a sense of loneliness that erodes the core of a person’s self-value. A simple smile and a word of kindness can make a big difference in a day full of hardship.

Take a moment to help a person that is struggling or homeless. Here are a few simple options to help:

1. Be sure to acknowledge a homeless person you encounter in the street or subway. Say a simple hello. Talk to them and engage in a simple conversation.

2. Ask what may be of help before giving them something.

3. Find out about your local food pantries that provide assistance to people in need. Consider giving that information to someone in need, or helping them get there for a hot meal.

- Use the WhyHunger network to find a provider in your area: http://www.networks.whyhunger.org

- If you live in NYC, the Bowery Mission offers a printable card that you can give out. https://www.bowery.org/get-involved/resources/

4. Sometimes, a homeless or struggling person just need help to get through the day. A gift card to a grocery store or a fast food chain allows a person to rest inside and eat.

5. Winter season feels extra-long when you are living on the streets or struggling. Check in your closet for winter gloves, hats, boots that might be of help to someone.
