About 2.3 million pounds of gift wrap ends up in the landfills each year. Wrap that is metallic, textured, or has glitter isn’t recyclable. Whether it’s for the holidays or all year long for birthdays and other events, consider sustainable wrapping options.

1. Fabric: Think scarves, tea towels, handkerchiefs, large napkins, all of which can serve as a bonus gift.

2. Newspapers, old maps, parchment paper: Out-of-date atlases, newpapers, etc can be upcycled rather than thrown away.

3. Baskets, pouches, inside-out chip bags: The latter is featured in the image above. Just clean out the salty residue of a chip bag, and reuse for gifting!

Back before everything became polarized, the term "environmentally friendly" didn't really exist. Yet, if we look back to an era (my grandparents, for example) there were a LOT of 🌏-friendly practices that they just did. It wasn't about labeling people or being political, it was just life!

My grandparents lived in a rural Wisconsin town, and I find myself connecting with certain things that they did in daily life that I wish I was doing! SO, I thought we might all benefit from a little of Grandma's wisdom.....and feel free to share yours 👇 too!

❤️ There was never a roll of paper towels around (unless it was at a picnic)! Grandma used reusable cloths to clean up spills or messes.

🚗 Remember "errand day?" Grocery shopping and other trips seemed to get piled together into 1 day every week. (Their carbon emissions were probably so low!)

🛍 There’s an old saying from the WWII era in the United States: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” Sometimes those impulse buys aren't the best idea and items end up in the trash. Repair (it), don't throw (it).

🍲 Food never went in the trash. If there was any food leftover, it was saved and prioritized in the days ahead.
