Once asbestos fibers enter the body, they never dissolve and can cause inflammation and permanent changes to the body's cells.  Prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause life-threatening diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
